Wallabies head coach Les Kiss has backed rookie Test playmaker Declan Meredith to steer the team against the All Blacks in Sydney this week, while Harry McLaughlin-Phillips could make his debut off the bench.
McLaughlin-Phillips, 22, led the Western Force to a Super AUS title and has earned selection ahead of Ben Donaldson, who started last week and was a hero of last month’s win over South Africa. Meredith is just three Tests into his Wallabies career. He steered the side to wins over Japan and Italy after losing to France on his debut.
Bench and backline changes
Kiss is doubling down on fresh talent in the game-driving role. He has also looked to strengthen his bench by moving star loosehead prop Angus Bell into an impact role. Former All Black Aidan Ross moves into the starting side.
Isaac Henry replaces the injured Len Ikitau and will partner Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii in midfield. Harry Potter moves onto the left wing, and Filipo Daugunu takes a place at the end of the matchday 23.
Josh Canham, who has returned to fitness, joins the bench alongside Carlo Tizzano and Kalani Thomas. They replace Nick Champion de Crespigny and Tate McDermott respectively.
Kiss on the week ahead
Kiss said the Wallabies gained a clear picture of where they must improve after last week’s defeat. “We’ve said all along we’ll continue to work hard and grow our game, and the squad has been impressive in the way they have prepared this week,” he said.
Kiss also highlighted the wider programme for the day. “This Saturday will be a great occasion with the Wallaroos and Sevens teams also playing in our own backyard,” he said.
He described the match as a major motivator. “Playing our final Test on home soil for 2026 is a huge motivator, and we’re determined to put out a performance all Australians can be proud of.”
